Truck Accident Statistics
In 2003, the most recent date for which there is data available, there were 58,512 fatal vehicle accidents in the United States. Of those, 4,669 accidents involved large trucks, 18-wheelers to the rest of us. Large trucks are more likely to be involved in multi-vehicle traffic accidents than are passenger vehicles. Also, the vast majority of accidents involving large trucks occurred either in rural areas, during the day, or on weekdays. Shockingly enough, only 1% of all fatal truck accidents are DUI related as compared to 22% for drivers of passenger vehicles and light trucks. Over 1/4th of drivers of large trucks involved in fatal accidents had been convicted of a previous speeding violation.
While California has the most fatal traffic accidents, Texas has the most fatal accidents involving large trucks. This statistic is true for both 2003 and 2002. Not exactly something to write home about. This could be due to the large spaces of the state of Texas that are considered rural (read as: the wide open spaces) and the large number of trucks going north from Mexico as part of the NAFTA highway. The second also applies to California but not quite as much as it does to Texas as California is on the coast and Texas enjoys a more central position in the country. This central position allows for better access to the rest of the country. I think it is safe to say that once the NAFTA highway is complete, an even larger portion of large truck accidents will occur in Texas.
