New Hours Of Service Rules May Lead To More Accidents
The new proposed hours of service rules could harm truck drivers and lead to more accidents. The new rules include longer driving hours. It would allow truck drivers to operate their rigs for 12 consecutive hours. This would allow for 2 additional hours of service than what is allowed under the current rule. If truck drivers are driving drowsy at 10 hour shifts, 12 hours increases potential accidents. Drowsiness is one of the most common reasons for truck accidents in the United States. Studies show that 1 in 10 truck drivers are driving drowsy.
The new proposed rule does not allow for adequate hours of sleep. As proposed, the new rule would only allow a minimum of 32 hours off-duty time after drivers have been working for 5 or 6 days straight at 12 hours shifts. Between 12 hours shifts, drivers would be given a minimum of 8 hours to complete all of their personal business and sleep before their next 12 hour shift is scheduled to begin. This is not nearly enough time for a driver to take care of any personal business and get an adequate amount of sleep before returning to work.
These are just a few issues that accompany the proposed change in hours of service rules. Truck accidents are already at an all time high, so knowing your rights and options should you be part of a truck accident is important. Whether you are a truck driver or not, these proposed hours of service rules affect everyone's safety on the road.
