Differences between Car and Truck Regulations
A large portion of the general population thinks of car accidents and truck accidents as being roughly the same thing. The main difference they can see is in the size of the vehicles involved. While the size portion of their assessment is correct, there are many other differences between the two types of accidents.
A huge difference in accidents involving cars and those involving trucks is the license type. To be a truck driver, a person must have a special license for a truck. Obtaining this license involves taking a rigorous course where they do teach you how to drive the truck. Drivers education for normal vehicles is not as strenuous. There is a home-taught version. Truck drivers do not have a home taught option for learning to drive a truck.
The next biggest difference between the two types of accidents involves ownership and insurance. When a car gets into an accident, it is generally owned by a single person who is insured through a single company. When a truck gets into an accident, it is much more complicated. There is often an owner for the cab and a different one for the trailer. The owner of the cab may or may not be the driver involved in the accident. In addition, there are multiple insurance companies involved. The driver generally has one set of insurance for his driving. The owner of the trailer has insured the trailer. The trucking company that hired the driver is insured. All of this makes an accident involving a truck a very complicated thing.
Roads are often regulated regarding the presence of trucks. Many roads in the country, not the interstates of course, are not built to withstand the weight of an 18-wheeler. Others are not good for the large trucks because they have curves that are too sharp. Generally speaking, there are not roads that cars are not permitted to use. Trucks on highways generally have a lower speed limit than the cars do. They often are required to use the right lane.
Basically, there are a lot more rules for a truck to follow which means there are a lot more rules for the trucks to break.
