CDL Program
For most people, getting a driver’s license means taking a written and driving test at the DMV. This type of license is called a class C license. For those who drive a larger vehicle such as a truck or 18-wheeler, there is a different type of license. Every professional truck driver is required to have what is called a Commercial Driver’s License. This means that they have to go through a CDL program before they can get behind the wheel of a bigger truck. There was an Act that was passed in the late 80’s that requires that they have gone through specific training before they can drive. This act was created in order to improve conditions on the roadways with bigger trucks and the other vehicles on the roads.
Along with this special license there are three classes that you could have. The first is a Class A license which allows you to carry above 26,000 pounds. The next is a Class B which allows you to carry up to 26,000 pounds. The last is the Class C which allows you carry multiple passengers but doesn’t meet requirements for a Class A or B. There are also specific parts of the test that you may take for different things. H is for Hazardous Materials which means that you are allowed to carry Hazardous Materials on your truck. N is for Tank Vehicles which is usually used for military personnel. There are a few other types of CDL’s that you can get. It depends on what your company is going to require you to have.
