The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is a separate entity within the U.S. Department of Transportation that was established by the Motor Carrier Safety Improvement Act of 1999. It went into effect January 1, 2000.

The primary mission of the FMCSA is to reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities involving large trucks and busses. They wish to accomplish these goals by conducting systematic research directed toward fuller scientific discovery, knowledge, and understanding of Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) accidents. The other way in which they attempt to accomplish their goal, is through the adoption, testing, and deployment of innovative driver, carrier, vehicle, and roadside practices and technologies that are the best.

The strategic objectives are quite extensive. The FMCSA wants to produce safe drivers through extensive and ongoing job training, to improve the safety of Commercial Motor Vehicles, produce safe carriers, to advance safety through information-based initiatives, and to enable and motivate internal excellence.

The website for FMCSA includes everything from regulations and forms to statistics concerning truck accidents. The statistics of accidents are broken down by what was involved in the crash such as whether or not the truck is carrying hazardous material. They also have a lovely section containing results from drug and alcohol testing surveys.

Despite the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's best efforts at improving the safety of Commercial Motor Vehicles and at reducing the number of accidents, there are still many truck accidents in the country that often result in injuries to drivers of both CMVs and ordinary passenger vehicles. If you or someone you know has been injured in an accident involving an 18-wheeler, there may be legal options available to you.
