What makes truck accidents so special?

The sheer weight and size of many commercial trucks, along with their structural design, create several risks which are fairly unique to truck accidents:

• Fuel Fires: When a truck catches fire following a collision, it is usually due to a spark from the battery coming into contact with leaked diesel fuel. Poor battery placement increases the risk of such a fire, and may be a factor in determining liability.
• Rollovers: Rollovers are a key cause of death or serious injury in large truck accidents. Because of the size of many commercial vehicles, it is easy for rollovers to occur due to driver error, truck malfunctions, or simply bad road conditions.
• Brake Malfunctions: Stopping something with as huge a mass as an 18-wheeler puts incredible stress on the truck’s air brake system. During a stop, the truck’s air brakes may heat up to around 600 degrees – the safety limit. Any discrepancy in maintenance or weight distribution could easily cause the brake system to fail.
