NAFTA Regulations on Cross Border Traffic
The North American Free Trade Agreement went into effect in January of 1994. In over 14 years of existence it has had a tremendous impact on the transportation and exchange of goods across the United States and Mexico border. It has also helped to increase regulation of the commercial vehicles that carry these goods to streamline standards for trucks traveling in from Mexico.
Insurance
The United States Department of Transportation and Texas Department of Transportation require all Mexican motor carriers to have insurance covering bodily injury and property damage up the U.S. value of $75,000. Motor vehicles that carry hazardous materials are required to have US $1 million to US $5 million in coverage. The amount is dependent on the type of hazardous material.
Registration
Trucks and truck tractors are required to display their NAFTA permit windshield validation sticker at all times. It is to be placed on the lower left corner of the windshield. Drivers of trailers and semi-trailers will receive a NAFTA annual permit license plate. All receipts issued for permits must be carried with the driver while on the road.
