Jackknife Prevention
Jackknifing is a dangerous thing. Jackknifing occurs when a vehicle like a commercial truck “folds” accidentally—either the cab turns sideways down the road or the trailer begins to swing out of control. Jackknifing is not only dangerous for the people in vehicles around the truck, but also for the truckers. Usually, truck drivers are able to compensate for the skidding or bad weather that can cause jackknifing, but if conditions are serious enough, it can result in a truck jackknifing, and possible collisions with other vehicles.
However, engineers have developed several jackknifing devices to help truckers and other vehicles stay safe on the roads:
- They have developed a system that prohibits the movement of the trailers, so they are less likely to swing.
- Using Anti-lock Brakes that were originally designed for airplane for the tractor/cab.
- Adding a device to the rear brakes called a load-sensing brake-pressure regulator, which can vary the pressure of the brakes to help with heavier loads.
Jackknifing is a very dangerous occurrence when it happens. If you are driving in bad weather, keep in mind that trucks and eighteen-wheelers are in danger of jackknifing. Keeping a safe distance from these vehicles and allowing enough room to pass can help keep you and your family safe.
